The events with the Orient Dining Express are organised by Steam Train Maldegem-Eeklo to support their activities so that they can restore and maintain the entire collection. The whole organisation of these events are possible thanks to the help of our volunteers.
On board of the Orient Dining Express you will travel back in time to the sixties and seventies, when these restaurant trains of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (the international company of sleeping trains) used the international connections on the daily.
The chef, the employees of the caterer and our volunteers work together to give you an unforgettable experience.
Since we only have 12 tables available per carriage (a total of 24 tables), booking in advance is not possible. We think that every visitor has to right to be treated in the same way.
If you want to celebrate with a bigger group – with family, friends or colleagues – you can also rent your own exclusive Orient Dining Express (minimum of 20 people).
Both the departure and the arrival is the railway station of Maldegem; at the official address of Steam Train Maldegem-Eeklo : stationsplein 8, 9990 Maldegem. There is enough parking space in the surrounding streets.
Unless mentioned otherwise on the page of the specific event* the following things are included in the price:
* Prices may differ due to changes or errors. Consult the specific page of the event of your choice.
During the train ride itself, our equipment on board is very limited. That’s why we are not able to provide an alternative on the day of the event. We kindly ask you to let us know in advance.
Due to the historical setting in our trains, we are not able to offer facilities for nurturing young children. Because of the limited space to pass by the door or in the hallways, it is not possible to get on board with a wheelchair or a baby wagon.
We love pets and they are welcome in our regular steam and diesel trains, but not on the Orient Dining Express because of the unique and fragile interior.
The Orient Express is a famous train that speaks to the imagination of a lot of people. But did you know that this train was a Belgian invention? The Belgian banker Georges Nagelmackers was impressed by the American Pullman trains and decided to develop a system with sleeping accommodation for train travelers that was even more luxurious and comfortable than the American ones.
In 1876, he founded the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (International Company of sleeping trains). With the support of the Belgian king Leopold II he was able to get the first train on the track in 1883, on the legendary Orient Express track between Paris and Istanbul.
In 2012, the first wagon of this well-known train came in our hands.
In 2018, 135 years after the Orient Express was born, Steam Train Maldegem-Eeklo saved a second wagon from destruction. This restaurant wagon, called WR2982, was built in 1927 in Italy and was used by Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits until 1965. After being modernized in Milan, the wagon was used by the Italian Railway (FS) until 1986. Afterwards, the wagon landed in Belgium, more specific in the workshops of Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits on the coast side (Oostende), where they restored it. In 1988, the wagon served as a restaurant in the Brussels Bruparck, an area full of restaurants and bars. Unfortunately (of fortunately for us) the restaurant area was closed down, which meant they wanted to destroy the restaurant-wagon. Luckily, we were able to save the wagon from being destructed. It will take us a few years to restore the wagon to its original and authentic state.
